About the Recipe

Remember that cold brew coffee is concentrated, so dilute it with water. Experiment with the coffee-to-water ratio and steeping time to find your preferred strength and flavor profile. Enjoy your homemade cold brew coffee!

Ingredients

  • Coarsely ground coffee (medium to dark roasts optimally)

** Check out my specially curated list of coffees here

  • Cold, filtered water

  • Large glass jar or pitcher

  • Fine Mesh bag or coffee filter (I use this one ; also great for making nut milks)

  • Ice cubes

Optional:

  • Sweeteners (sugar, syrup, etc.) and cream or milk, to taste

Preparation

Measure the Coffee: Start by measuring your coffee grounds. A general guideline is to use a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:4 or 1:5. This means, for every 1 ounce (28 grams) of coarsely ground coffee, you'll need 4 to 5 ounces (120 to 150 milliliters) of cold, filtered water.

Grind the Coffee: Grind your coffee beans to a coarse consistency, similar to breadcrumbs. If you don't have a grinder, many stores offer pre-ground coffee labeled specifically for cold brew.

Combine Coffee and Water: In your large glass jar or pitcher, add the coarsely ground coffee. Then, pour in the cold, filtered water. Stir the mixture to ensure that all the coffee grounds are saturated.

Cover and Steep: Seal the jar or pitcher with a lid or plastic wrap ( I really love these silicon food/dish covers ). Let the coffee steep at room temperature or in fridge for an extended period, typically 12 to 24 hours. The steeping time can vary depending on your taste preference; longer steeping times will yield a stronger brew.

Strain: After steeping, it's time to strain the cold brew to remove the coffee grounds. You can do this using a fine-mesh sieve, a coffee filter, or a purpose-made cold brew coffee maker. Strain the liquid into another container or directly into a glass, I prefer a nice sealable glass caraf.

I can not stress this enough - this creates cold brew concentrate, You need to add water to your storage glass/jar.

Serve: Fill a glass with ice cubes, then pour your cold brew coffee over the ice. Add any desired sweeteners and cream or milk to taste.

Enjoy: Your homemade cold brew coffee is now ready to enjoy! It's less acidic and smoother than traditional hot-brewed coffee, making it a perfect summer drink.

Storage: You can store any leftover cold brew in the refrigerator for up to a week. Make sure it's in a sealed container to maintain freshness.
